The university’s basketball court was nearing the end of its lifespan, and it had very little give. The university wanted a hardwood flooring system with better shock absorption to protect athletes from injuries, but it also required a floor durable enough to hold up to the strain of concerts and other high-traffic events.
Solution
We recommended and installed an interlocking subfloor system that offers increased cushion and give, as well as resilience. The system consists of a soft yet durable foam layer criss-crossed between moisture-resistant dimensional lumber. The top layer of the court is maple. Although courts like this are designed to last decades, the University of Indianapolis had an unfortunate flood the year after the new court was installed and hired us to do a complete replacement. In addition to the basketball court, we installed epoxy flooring in the locker rooms and carpet in the stadium’s mezzanine area.
